Effort, Force and Heaviness: The Missing Components of Proprioception

Presented by Guido Van Ryssegem

Often ignored, the senses of effort, force and heaviness are traditionally part of proprioception. Until recently, prevailing views about the origin of these senses were dominated by the belief that they were generated entirely within the brain. But recent evidence shows that these senses can be generated by both centrally and peripheral afferent activity. Find out how you can augment your performance or rehabilitation program by applying the scientific principles of effort, force and heaviness.

Effort, force and heaviness are senses that the weightlifter, athlete and rehabber are definitely familiar with. Unfortunately, they are often ignored as being part of the proprioceptive senses. As every day and performance activities rely on these senses to be able to respond to challenges around us, we need to understand the science behind them and know what they are, so we can manipulate them to the benefit of our clients.

This workshop will include scientific information related to the senses of effort, force and heaviness. Exercises will be proposed based on the Kinetic Integration receptor classification system that includes interoceptor, proprioceptor and exeteroceptor biased exercises. Practical applications will be discussed and demonstrated that can detect and correct sensory deficits for the performance and rehabilitation populations.

The sense of effort, force and heaviness will be experienced through the Kinetic Integrations classification system. First, sensory deficits will be assessed with the participants. Secondarily the proposed exercises will be practiced by the participants. Finally, the proposed exercises will be included during weightlifting to improve performance.
